Senior Backstage Engineer

Job Description

In this role, you'll work with engineering teams to support the initiatives of the core tech for our customer. The role will be responsible for building the Internal Developer Portal, leveraging Backstage with our guiding north star: Developers no longer need to write Infrastructure as Code.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience;

• 1+ years of experience working with Backstage (by Spotify) as a platform, including customizing plugins and managing the developer portal;

• Solid understanding of Node.js, TypeScript, and React (used in Backstage plugin development);

• Proven experience integrating CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, and cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure) with Backstage;

• Experience working in DevOps environments or Platform Engineering teams supporting developer workflows;

• Deep understanding of the Backstage architecture, including plugin development, software catalog, scaffolder, and TechDocs;

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Helm, and modern infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Pulumi, etc.);

• Familiarity with tools like GitHub, GitLab, Jenkins, CircleCI, ArgoCD, or FluxCD;

• Solid knowledge of service discovery, developer portals, and software lifecycle automation;

• Good command of API integration, OAuth2, and SSO setup (e.g., integrating Okta, Azure AD, etc.);

• Strong communication skills – ability to work closely with developers, DevOps, and product teams;

• Passion for developer experience and building tools that improve engineering productivity;

• Proactive, self-driven, and comfortable leading architecture discussions;

• Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading small technical initiatives is a plus;

• Comfortable working in cross-functional, agile teams.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in gathering requirements from ML, DI, and Engineering teams to inform capability requirements;

• Serve as a technical resource for developer teams, project managers, and analysts;

• Collaborate with development teams to highlight and resolve problems with systems;  

• Participate in design reviews and work with developers to improve or troubleshoot backstage templates;

• Work with other Platform teams to integrate Paved Pathways into Backstage;

• Work closely with security engineers to ensure security is in accordance with compliance policies set by our customer, HIPAA, or other authorities;

• Ensure appropriate documentation is developed and maintained relative to our IDP capabilities.
